Safest way is the way Mike said to do it. Disconnect a line and see which is which.
Top fitting on the trans is the return line if you can keep track of the lines.
From the Hotrodders board:
[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]Transmission fluid cooler lines: on the 700R4 the bottom fitting on the right side of the transmission is the "out" line to the cooler and the top fitting is for the return line from the cooler. These fittings are 1/4-inch pipe thread[/font]

That chart isn't indicative of fluid flow. It just gives a clean way to hook everything up and it's not "wrong". IF you install an inline filter setup though, you need to know "in" and "out" of the trans because if you hook the filter up backwards it will cut off flow.

Just to clarify put the temp sensor on the hot (out) side.

Stupid me just followed that diagram exactly (other then I am not using the stock rad cooler) Today I tested the system and sure enough I had the system hooked up backwards. Though I had tons of fluid flow thru the filter backwards when I tested it?!?!?! Should I replace the filter just in case or do think its still good? I see no contaminats in the oil.
It was a simple easy fix since I used all those fittings. Good thing nothing seems wrong and the tranny is currently working great (knock on wood!!)
So for clarity for anyone reading this thru the search..

The external system uses a conventional oil filter. Your transmission's pressure varies. At idle, you'll have tons of fluid making it through the filter. Pressure builds at high throttle and road speeds, this going through the filter backwards will make the spring loaded "bypass" door in the filter slam shut leaving you with minimal fluid flow.

Reading this then I should route the hose from the bottom port to the in on the filter then to the cooler and back to the top port. I "thought" that is how I have it but after about 30 seconds of running the trans will whine BAD if put in gear, it quits if put in park. I have not driven it at all since it is a new trans and I need to get it right.
