4x4 t-case, bad idea?

I will be running a v8 turbo,4l80e, setup. My plan is to run the the hd t-case I have. It is a manual t-case, I bought it off of Parish. He said he just left the t-case in 4 wheel drive and just switched from 2 wheel to 4 wheel from the front diff. I plan on having a push button set up to control the front diff. enguagement. I was thinking launch in 4wd, push the button to go to 2wd at the end of 2nd gear (or beginning of 3rd). I was thinking of crusing around town and highway in 2wd. I know if I jump on it the back tires would just go up in smoke but that sound like fun to me... I also know that I would have to change the front diff to a 4x4 unit. I think it would be a simular setup as parish but in a lighter truck. Or I could just use the ty t-case. What do you think?

I prolly wouldn't expect the front diff to dis-engage at WOT, sounds dangerous

At the strip, I don't think you'd see any benefit from trying to unlock the front end. And I'm not sure that I'd want to try either. The 7.25" IFS setup under these trucks isn't known for being bulletproof.

If it were my truck and checkbook, I'd ditch the full-time box, use the BW4472, and get the new 32 spline tcase input shaft that George is making. That way, you'd get good street and strip manners and be able to use the 4L80E in a stock configuration. Downside is no ability to do smoky burnouts, which the full-time box will give you. Personally, I think burning down a $500 pair of tires is kinda pointless. Tire smoke = power that isn't making it to the ground. The truck will be more manageable with AWD (ie, you could let your gf / wife / friends drive the truck and not be quite so worried about them getting it crossed up and wrapping it around a telephone pole).

That is how some of the 4wd silverado's are doing it on pt.net. There is one truck that I have in mind that ran 11.4 consistently at 119mph, 1.6 60ft, 5000lbs sbec 4wd, stock 6.0, sts turbo, 4l80e,meth ext. Yeah, I dont know about the smaller units that the s10's use. I dont know if it will disengage on the fly like the silverados will. I will have to do my research.

Good point, I was thinking that at the track I could warm up my drag radials in 2wd (burn out) and launch in 4wd like parish does. I forget what spline output shaft I put in the trans, I had to rebuild it and change it to fit the t-case I have. I thought it was 32, I will have to double check that. My wife will never drive my trucks, too bumpy! LOL! Thanks for replying.

Talk to Waller, he can set you up with the parts and the info to do it because he has the dis-engage set up.

27 spline actually
If it's got 27 spline already, then you could run the BW4472 without modification.

If you had a stock 4wd 80E (which would have a 32 spline output) you'd need George Blake (Prime Gears) BW4472 32 spline input shaft to have it work. The 32 spline trans output shaft is stronger than 27 spline. Nobody's quite sure how the 32 spline input will hold up, but it ought to be ok.

Good to know, Thanks

Re: 4x4 t-case, bad idea?

So what would be the disadvantage of running a 4x4 transfer case mated to the 4L80E and running the stock SyTy front diff? That way, you just switch the transfer case to 2WD when doing the burnouts, then switch to 4x4 for the run?

That way you don't have the viscous clutches to burn up.......

I may just be talking out of my rear end, but why wouldn't that work?

It would / will work.

There's 2 problems.
1.) Original poster asked about unlocking the front diff (say during the 2 - 3 shift) and nobody's quite sure IF it'll unlock or if it'll last.

2.) The 4wd box won't play well on pavement in 4wd (in something other than a straight line like at the strip). So, as long as you don't mind running around in 2wd most of the time, it's not really a problem.

That's what I was thinking. I really don't have the need for the AWD except when I'm racing. Here in Phoenix, there isn't snow, and it hardly rains, so the AWD isn't much of a benefit.

I see the point about unlocking the front diff though. That seems like it would be awfully harsh on the components unlocking under power. I was just thinking of alternatives. ;)
