Using engine stand for tranny stand?

so if things go right i will get a syty trans tommorow in trade for my old motor.

Just wondering if i took an engine stand and used it to hold a transmission, whould this work?

i guess you would have to use very long bolts and tubes around the bolts to enable access into the case.

Other than a table or the fixture shown in the atsg guide what else have others done?

I used one... Picked up an import el cheapo stand from harbor freight. Welded up my own clampy thingy out of some steel I had to hang onto the trans then mounted it to the stand.

I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow morning when I get off work and post em.

another way is to build a stand out of metal and cover the top of it with wood than cut a hole in it so the tail shaft goes down in it and it holds the tranny up for you and you jsut slide it all in from the top.

I cant give any specs on how to make the table because we used a kart stand and not everyone has one of those!!!

I would imagine though that a 3x4 or 4x4 square made out of 1 inch square tubing sould work well for the frame.

The whole thing mighta cost me 40 bucks which includes buying the el cheapo import engine stand. No laughing at my welding skills either :roll: .

I got an email asking some questions about the set up so I figured Id better clarify some things here... I did NOT weld the new el cheapo engine stand parts togeather. The engine stand is fully functional once the trans holding thingy is unbolted.

If you look in this pic you will see the bolts that hold the clamping fixture to the rotating head of the stand on the left. Everything to the right of those bolts is made from steel I had in the scrap pile. As a matter of fact the piece that looks like a tube with a plate welded to the end (trans end) and "legs" welded to the other (where the bolts are located) is whats left of another engine stand I had that the casters wore out.

So, all thats needed to use the engine stand as it was intended is to remove the four bolts that go through the "legs" on the trans holding fixture then reinstall the adjustable hardware to mount an engine.

The same thing can be easily duplicated without using 2 engine stands by using some scrap steel and a little immagination. I just ended up with a piece of another engine stand on there because thats what was on top of the steel scrap pile in the corner of the garage.

goin to the track tomorrow nite so i am about to find out how quick i will need another tranz, hopefully not!


damn wouldnt it be nice if i got a few 10ths off my 11.9 time and be able to drive home afterwards
