Stock cable relies on one little ridge to hold the setting. You adjust it a few times and you knock the ridge off. Hence the "click click click POP". It'll just "pop" right over the ridges that had stripped off.

I second what george said. I recently borrowed out a TV cable to check a trans issue. Mind you this cable was a stock one that had maybe 300 miles on it and had only been adjusted once in the life of the cable. Put it in the new truck and when it was adjusted it just popped no clicking. I could not believe it until I looked at the teeth and they were all stripped down and rolled over.
