transmission issues

So I'm still new to my sy, and when I put it in drive the thing likes to go into neutral. My dad is wanting to get into a shop and have the trans re-done, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to save some money.
Anyone have the same problem or any ideas on how to fix it?

If you have tools Remove the trans yourself have it rebuilt then reinstall it yourself. = save money.
