Shift points @ WOT

Hi group,

I would like your input on what rpm your Sy's shifts on at WOT? My Sy shifts @ 3500-4000 rpm, but if i adjust the TV cable anymore i get way to hard upshift in second (yes i know it should be hard) and it pulls to long on the other gears before shifting.
Presiate any info.

WOT-
1-2 shift should be at around 3800-4000
everything else should be in the powerband which is 42-4400

Oh Baby looks like I'm right on the money!! Question -- why should the 1-2 shift be lower than the others? Thanks.

My Ty shifts at 4000 @ WOT no matter what gear I'm in. I has a mechanic I know who happens to have three Typhoons look at it. He said my 1-2 shift is WAY too hard and that I have to either have it shift hard, or shift earlier. Any suggestions?

4300-4500 for all shifts on my truck, this is the best range IMO (I set it with a B&M governer kit because when I got the truck it had around a 5000 governer!). 3500 is waaaay too low. When my friends Ty was stock it shifted at 4000 1-2 and 4300 2-3-4, that seems to be about the average for a stock transmission.

Coupla things here.

First off, a scan tool is going to give you the best indication of your true shift points. Eyeballing it ain't accurate. A slipping trans is easy to spot here, as you'll see the rpm flare, or very high shift points.

Second, the shift points are determined by your governor in the trans. They have *NOTHING* to do with your engine RPM. This is the main reason why your shift points vary from gear to gear. They are really dependent on your vehicle speed.

1-2 shift, converter is slipping, versus 2-3, 3-4, where converter is sometimes locked... it will make a difference. Also, at 1-2 WOT, the acceleration is greater than at 2-3 or 3-4. Graph your vehicle speed on Diacom or Datamaster, and look at the slope (the units would be distance per time per time, which would be the same as a typical acceleration unit). Anyways, point is that you may hit the vehicle speed that produces a shift at 1-2 a bit early (early engine speed wise) producing a low rpm shift point. Note the RPM at which the motor drops down when it picks up in the next gear. You really want to be about 500rpm below the torque peak. Most times an optimal RPM to drop down to is about 3200.

Mines shift at 1st 4500,4300,4000, then fourth 3600. I seem to have a problem in fourth gear, after shifting to 4th the rpm drop to 2600. Brian H thinks my chip (3 bar) maybe locking up the TC(Brian H) too early. I get 6 to 7 degree know only in 4th most of the times. Can adjusting the TV cable help this? Appreciate the help, please email me if you like to see the datmaster file.
thanks

It's possible b/c previous owner had the tranny rebuild. So i don't know what's inside it, but if i set it up with the TV cable to shift at 4000-4100rpm from first to second. I get wiplash damage everytime it shift in second unless i have wot? It shifts smother at WOT then partial throttle????????

Swede,
Does your trans have a shift kit? The valve body could be set up way too aggressive.

Swede, mine definitely acts like that. If I do a boost launch and hold WOT, the 1-2 shift is firm but good. However if I do an off-idle "launch" and hit WOT, it will shift somewhat violently into 2nd, depending on the conditions it will feel like the tires are chirping hard and I really gotta hang onto the steering wheel to keep things in check! It is really fun but I worry about my tranny and driveline so I try not to do that on purpose. Plus if I do that in the rain it will really break traction, at least with these old tires.

It is like, my truck (with the turbocharger device) has a horse-shoe power curve, where it takes a little to get going, then once the power is coming online, it's unstoppable, then it evens out and finally shifts. Well on a boosted launch, the shift point happens after the "unstoppable" phase. However, on an off-idle WOT stomp, the shift occurs right smack in the middle of the "unstoppable" phase, and results in the harsh shift.

So now that I've mentioned this, does anyone else's truck behave the same way?

My Ty acts exactly the same way. If I'm slowly accelerating it shifts hard, but if I'm at WOT, it's a lot smoother.

My first SY 1123 shifted at 4400 all gears with a B&M shift kit

my second SY shifts with a 5000 governor at 5100,with an art carr tranny and a shift kit

my third wont be a SY but i hope a skyline will take its place
