so,
I take my truck out for the first time in about a week (Had to go fill it up, and bring it back)
I notice I am getting a noticable rotation bang. Here are hte symptoms:
When I am going around a corner, you can not only hear it, but feel it.
Sometimes I can feel it pulse when the brakes are going on.
Now, when I parked it at home. I went to the back axle,
When I pull the wheel (physically pull it) I feel it move out and clank, and I can push it back. is this normal?

Re: Rear Axle Question

I have seen this many times, and yes it is normal. If you go to the other side, does it move? More than likely it won't. The clunking is probably your posi unit not unlocking properly, and binding in a turn when it is supposed to unlock to let one rear wheel spin faster than the other.

the clunking noise and pulse where weird.
It seems to do it on both sides.

Re: Rear Axle Question

The movement shouldn't be your noise though, and if they stop, the c-clips are still in place. Either way what you are describing doesn't sound good, you should check out the rear end right away, just pull the cover off and have a look.

Re: Rear Axle Question

The thing that I do notice is that there is no steering wheel shake. It is sometimes noticeable at about 30mph, but at slower speed (15mph and below) it is noticeable (audible and the knock with rotation). Not the front end, positive.
When I take the cover off, what should I look for?

Dam that's weird I am having a very similar problem . just removed the dif cover and no visible problem . I completely drained it and no metal shavings or visible parts? I notice it most from drive to reverse not when moving just when I go to park it. when I turn the wheel with truck off the ground seems like a lot of play. could it be the pinion bearing ?

Re: Rear Axle Question

That's a good start, bearings can do funny things, and since you have to open the diff up to do this, it should give you a good look at everything. Just check the diff fluid for any signs of metal when you're in there.
