My typhoon is acting strange between idle and 1100 rpm, and was wondering if any body has had a similar experience to mine.

With a light foot, the truck is stumbling like it needs a tuneup from idle to 1100 rpm, and while it's making it's way to 1100 it makes two clunking sounds like there is somebody under the truck hitting the bottom of the truck with a broomstick. It isn't a hard whack, but just a light thud. After the second clunk, the truck runs just like normal.

When it does the two clunks, the boost gage goes up a few psi during the clunks (visually obvious).

When it is given a medium to heavy foot, the truck doesn't clunk, and it runs a lot better up to when it gets in to boost. Once it's in boost, it runs great.

I've stopped driving it until I figure out what is wrong with it and have narrowed it down to these few things:

1) Bad turbo?
2) Broken torque convertor?
3) Messed up transmission?
4) Something internal in the engine?

Has anybody had similar symptoms before? I haven't checked anything yet and was just curious.

The propshaft is Dynatech (don't know if it's stock or not) and it looks like it's in great condition. When the front is jacked up, there is a very small amount of rotation in the front shaft when the front wheels are rotated, but the movement is very small and then the tires just spin. Is this play normal? If so, the AWD components are probably good.

This noise isn't noticeable at first startup while it is somewhat cold, and gets worse the longer it is driven. Again, it only happens in low RPMs and it usually runs like it needs a tuneup, clunks twice, and then runs like normal...

Are you sure the noise is from your floor board? Or could the sound be your engine backfiring into your plenum? It would sound like a broom stick whack.

If so, you are describing the problem some of are having just describing it diffrently. Right around 800 to 1100 RPM accelerating normally mostly when the engine hasn't warmed all of the way. Under load it will pop once or maybe twice.

Sound familar?

That sounds very familiar, I can feel it in my foot on the pedal and the boost gauge goes up a few psi when it does it. It tends to do it more once the engine is warmed up and less when cold. I am also getting crap gas mileage now.

Accellerating normally, it does this, but if it is given a heavy foot, it doesn't really do it and acts a lot better.

Know what would be causing it?

It will do it mostly during normal acceleration from a stopsign, light, etc. when the RPMs are low. I haven't tried a boost launch again since it is running poorly. Should I to see exactly what is going on?

Once it pops about twice, the RPMs are near 1500 at that point, and the truck runs like normal (without the missing, popping).

Know why by any chance?

why dont you hold the brake and slowly give it gas and see if it still pops at 1500 rpm?

What am I looking for, specifically? The truck is very lowered, so that may be the problem as well. I will do the brake check after work today.

What he said... I just changed mine on my 100K mile Sy & got rid of a few "clunks." Get the Pep Boys "Help!" brand (~$20 ea.) as they use a bolt instead of a stud, & are completely insulated (filled) w/ rubber. Do a search on here & you'll find plenty who say the same thing.

It will do it in neutral if you play with the throttle just right, so I know that at least it's not the transmission.

I thought it might be another strange noise coming from the ATR cold air intake, but I ripped out my cold air box and it is definitely backfiring through the intake and is audible through the turbo (the turbo is fine as far as play goes).

It sounds like some people are struggling with this on the forum, are there any known fixes? I am going to put the stock chip and injectors in with a complete tuneup once the chip gets to me. Does anybody that has had this problem before know if it will be fixed with a regular tuneup?

I'm in the middle of reinstalling everything and will see if she is fixed in a little bit. I was told that backfiring in to the plenum had to do with timing from Paul, so I am retiming it as well. Has nobody else had and fixed this problem before?
