knock sensor idea

is there a way to hook up a light to my knock sensor so I can have a diplay for when the motor detects knock. and if so I wonder if there is a way to have like a 2 stage light like 5 degrees and below will light up one light and anything over 5 will light up a second light. Any thoughts on this

BG tried this....the GN's have something like it and I think he was working on it but never quite finished before he sold out again.....oh I mean sold his truck again...:smile:

yeah I have seen the GN ones and thats why I was thinking that it might be able to be done. and also I remember somebody that hooked up sound to the knock sensor and he could hear what the ecm heard.

Ok, here's the basics.

You have a knock sensor, just a simple microphone. It hears things, sends a signal to a filter, it filters out regular engine noise from bad engine noise, when it hears bad engine noise, it lets the ECM know (passes the signal along, just like a crossover). The filter is specific for each motor. The Syty's have the filter built into the chip. The Buicks have this filter in the ESC module, which is external. The Buick knock gauges pick up that signal after it is filtered. If you do it before, you'll have a light show of a knock sensor. To do it on ours, you have to pick the signal up after it is filtered, off the chip itself. I was under the assumption that one of the ECM pins had the filtered knock signal on it, but with my setup wired for that, it didn't work. So you can rig up a knock LED (this has been done on a couple trucks) off the memcal itself, or run a Buick ESC off the stock or a separate knock sensor, and then run Buick knock gauges. That's all that we know will work now. There are more options, but they'll take some work & testing. I don't have time to chase this project down.

I also would like a 2 1/16" knock gauge. It would be much more handy (and safer) than looking at DataMaster in the passenger's seat. (Not that I necessarily engage in such behavior.. ) If someone were to produce this project I would buy one for between $25-$50, I'd drop it right in place of my existing Air/Fuel gauge.

msd builds a nice knock detector "gauge"
call their tech line and ask them about it - it comes complete with it's own sensor
kenne b includes them on a very few of their supercharger kits - we just did a 4.7 dakota that came with one.
i have 1 in stock at this time as well

Yup, it uses a regular GM knock sensor, a display, and a sensitivity knob.

So instead of GM calibration engineers spending weeks & months deciding on the ESC calibration, they leave it up to you, twisting a knob. "That doesn't sound like it's detonating... ". The GM cal may be off, but I'd rather trust it.

Does Atr have an audible knock signal in their A/F gauge sensor thing they sell?? Has anyone used one. If these thing would work, but only off the ecm singal than whats happens when a sped-pro is installed in place of the ecm?? Brian??

hi brian
i agree oon the msdsensor unit...but they're easy to set up with a small bit of experimentation - first and easiest is simply tweak it so its response curve is close to that of scanner kr data - its quite easy.
verify it by running a gallon of piss gas and recomparing the 2 curves.

ps - looking for your thoughts on 36's with your 10-1 i have - how much leeway is int eh stock processor far as trimming fuel curves off block learn/integers?

Couldn't you use the MSD knock detector and calibrate it with Datamaster? Passenger could "dial in" the gauge, while watching for knock on Datamaster. Just adjust till they agree.
