Well, sort of fixed. To make a long story short, it was the CAC pump, as I was suggested a few times. To make the long story, well, long...I noticed that the vehicle launched like a bullet, but seemed to fade on the top end. In reading some other posts in the forum, it had been suggested that the CAC pump was bad. I looked at the fuse, and it was blown...putting a new fuse in didn't fix anything. So I took it apart today. The stock unit was not completely locked, but was gritty to the point that it would not have been turning.
I thought of getting a Jabsco, but didn't want to wait. So off to my local Walmart I went, and got an Atwood A500. A bit of hose-clamping and fittings later (yes, my inlet line had a kink in it) and it was in. Seemed to have a bit of trouble priming, but after waiting a bit, it took off. Well I can see what the IC was supposed to look like now...it's a veritable Niagara falls in there.
I let it warm up a bit, and took it out on my "test road." Now this certainly isn't a several-hour heat soak test, but in a roll from 40 mph or so, there was absolutely no pinging. I don't have a Datamaster (yet) so I can't tell for sure. But in any case, the seat-of-the-pants meter says vastly improved. It no longer falls on its face after 60 or so. In addition, I saw no tach flutter, although it's obviously got a cause other than the CAC pump (which I will hunt down and find.)
So I'd like to thank everyone for their input, and especially Keith455@syty.net for his wonderful how-to on replacing the stuff! Next step is going to be the removal of the metal lines and their replacement with rubber. But one thing at a time.
