Kill the cat

having a bit of a small prob removing my stock cat from the downpipe...

for those who havent graced the underside of their trucks, the cat slides over the DP and is held in place with a muffler clamp.

i got the rest of the exhaust off with ease... but the cat wont let go of the DP. i can rotate it around, and kinda wiggle it from side to side and up and down, but the damn thing wont slide down off the DP. i have no idea what the hell is holding it.

ive tried it when its cold, ive sprayed a full can of lubricant between the small gap i can get by wiggling it.... ive tried it when the cat and DP was hot....

hammer, wrenches.... you name it, ive hit the cat with it to try to slide it back off the DP

any other tricks of the trade i can try before i head over to a local muffler shop i know and put the thing on the lift and take a torch to it?

TIA

had the same problem a couple of months ago. eventually had to take the cut off wheel to the cat and make a slit perpendicular to the mating surface (ie from front to back) and get a big ol' screwdriver in there to open it up.

the dp is pretty far in there and i spend the better part of a day trying to knock the damn thing off of there. had all the mounting pads removed, everything.

you could do that and then have the muffler shop reweld it back together. i can show you the cat if you drop by.

didnt want to resort to cutting.... but if i have to... i was consider just taking the torch and getting it hotter than what i could with just running the truck and hopefully get it to slide off....

all the mounts are removed. the cat is hanging in space, only thing holding it on is the DP.

why would i have to remove the DP flange off the tranny? dont want the DP out, just the cat off the DP :fadein:

i have to wire it down to the trans xover to keep it from rattling and bouncing everywhere while i drive

Getting the stock cat off can be a real PITA  ! I had the "pleasure" of removing mine two years ago when I got my ATR exhaust. Seems the previous owner attempted to replace it by pounding a screwdriver into the downpipe and tired to pry the cat off  ... (didn't work BTW) Took three of us with a chiseling air hammer about 10-15 minutes to get off. When we got it off, we all took turns smashing the hell outta it with sledgehammers  . There was pics of it on the 'net for awhile.

Anywho, your best bet is to resort to the "blue tipped wrench". Heat the HELL outta the joint and then take a flat punch and beat it into submission :p . I have used this technique to get several stubborn pipes apart. HTH's

Adam, find a good place to hold the DP and put a ratchet tie down strap on the cat. Hook the other end to something else that won't move like a car. We've done this with the exhaust on the car as well, works every time. If you don't get it, give me a call. I'm off from school tomorrow.

I had this happen on Paul Schwab's ty, (aka little C). Hammer etc. no luck

took some heat to downpipe only, hammered it, became a flying object.

Maybe you can add the strap idea, and some heat.

When I do this I use a light oil and and an air chisel to peel a slot in the pipe that is slid over and it loosens up and usually works fine but it's noisey. Also don't forget the Big Fn Hammer trick. If all else fails get medieval on that ass. Or make it easy on your self and take it to the muffler shop.

thanks for the input everyone...

looks as though the majority of you say its time to move onto using force to remove el gato...

i think im gonna try to blue tipped wrench first :eek:nfire:

You should replace the cat with a Saudi Sy resonator

I did the cut off wheel slit idea. If you need to save the cat & use it again later, buy yourself a 2.5" band clamp to seal up any leaks you create by doing this cut, so you can pass any emissions tests.

I had the same problem with mine, and i couldn't get it seperated until i wore some trusty mechanix gloves (that i won at nats) and i pulled it right apart like i was strong or something. I also had the turbo side of the dp seperated from the turbo and clocked away from it to give the dp plenty of room to move.

The BFH helped move the dp out of the cat, but wouldn't seperate it for some reason.

just so happens i have a saudi laying in my room :-?

actually, i was going to throw it on there just to see how it sounded...still debating on my side exit setup whether to just do a straight pipe directly from the DP out the side, or if i should throw in a throaty sounding muffler or *gulp* this POS USED saudi i recieved... :fist:

but seeing that the stock cat wont let go of my truck, i thinking twice about putting on the saudi to see how it sounds for fear of ending up like i am now.

i'll probably just end up getting the stock cat off and just dump out of the DP for now until i figure out what i want to do with the exhaust setup.

we dont have emissions in FL, so wouldnt have to worry about saving the cat and using a band clamp.

however, i would still like to get the cat off without destroying it, just in case FL changes laws again, i'll have it just in case.

I am teh kingpin!
i had this problem.

sazall is my best friend.

it made it a lot easier to take the tranny out, with just a downpipe. and its not that loud.
