hot tranny temps

this past weekend I finished a 30,000 trany cooler and remote filter and temp sending unit. the cooler is in front of the radiator. and the filter is on the passenger side frame rail. I did away with the stock trany cooler.
I drove it saturday night and the gauge was reading past 210 deg. it was about 11 o'clock at night and about 80 degs out. Is this normal? did I do something wrong?
its got plenty of mobile 1 fluid. the fluid passes throught the filter then to the cooler.
the bottom line coming out of the tranny is the pressure line right?

i dunno if this will help, but i have heard synthetic fluid is bad for the transmission.

I don't think that any tranny builder on here reccomends moblie 1. PM jwaller and he can explain it.

ya, ditch the mobil 1 in the tranny, not good stuff. dex 3 or type F. I'd say dex 3 for 99% of our trucks.

Re: hot tranny temps

so I got the mobile one flushed out of kendrol dex III. Temps are still over 210 degrees. Is it too late, did the mobile one do too much damage? Is the guage not accurate? something else?

Just to clarify, I don't believe ALL synthetic ATF is bad....... but Mobile 1 has seen its fair share of bad press. I run Redline racing ATF which is fully synthetic, and recommended by Rossler. I agree, though, that most of the SyTy trannys out there would be fine with regular Dex 3 and consistent fluid/filter changes (and Lubeguard).

With the cooler on my truck at 11 at night I'm around 130-150 degrees just driving around. The only time I'm ever over 200 is if I dont turn the fans on or I'm on it alot in stop and go.

Re: hot tranny temps

I have to ask where is the temp gauge taking it's readings from? is this the temp before or after the cooler. if it's before then I could see them being correct, but if it's after then you have problems.

Re: hot tranny temps

yea the temp sending unit is with the aux filter that is before the cooler. then those temps are normal? I guess I should have put the filter after the cooler? To get a accurate reading? I just wanted the fluid to hit the filter before the cooler.

Re: hot tranny temps

ya the filter location is good. but most ppl check the temps either in the pan or in the line going back to the tranny. I know hartman used to reccommend checking it where you are but most ppl dont do that. that being said your temps should drop considerabbly when you get on the highway into a cruise mode with the conv locked up.

Re: hot tranny temps

You could add another sensor to the return line and monitor you cooling effiency.
Use a double throw switch. The difference can be amazing! 150+ degrees.
