Help with diff...

I tried reading the new thread but I'm having problems with the upper driver side bolt to frame. I just spend some spare time pulling the link and axle bolts but ran out of time. What else do I have to pull?

Re: Help with diff...

Your removing the front diff? If so you need to unbolt the axles and driveshaft, take out the two 18mm bolts on the drivers side through the case, then remove the two 18mm nuts that hold the passenger axle tube to the mount. After that it just helps to have some alligator wrestling experience

Re: Help with diff...

When u say the 2 bolts on the driverside. There is one on the bottom with easy access. And another at the top attached to a bushing and a weird spot to access the nut, right?

Re: Help with diff...

Yea it isnt fun. And that nut in the frame likes to run off so make sure you have a nice long flexi magnet around for that one.

+1 for the lower control arms, they dont give you quite enough room. I also grind the welds off the drivers side lower frame mounting tab and remove it. Once im done i just weld it back into place. It makes it a lot easier to get in and out, but only if you have the resources.

Also if you want to go through the trouble get the drag link out of the way. Unbolt it from the pitman and idler arm and push it up as far as you can. I have had the upper case mount get hung up on it before and cause problems.

Re: Help with diff...

Got all nuts and oth sh*t out the way. Having problems disconnecting the axles from the two halves. Am I suppose to remove something else than the six bolts holding them. Need help here? Should it be possible for the diff to maneuver over the flange because I don't have a welder and really don't wanna bend it?

Re: Help with diff...

Some more things that might help. If you've got the 6 bolts out then a chisel or other wedge type tool will separate the axles. Nothing else holding them together. It's extra work but will make all the difference; remove the oil cooler lines and adapter (from the block). I would not do this job again without doing this. If you want you can mark the nut and shaft and remove the flange. You just have to be SURE that you put them back exactly the way they came apart.

Re: Help with diff...

I got it out! I called my buddies over and we were messing with the halves couldn't quite get them to separate so we kinda manhandled it. I had removed the tires and my buddy pulled on the axle boot to give more clearance. Got the passenger, then the driver's side. After we just moved the jack and wiggled it out in a funky position. I marked everything up and hopefully I'll remember how to get everything back in. Now time to get the pan off...
