Hard starts are one of the common signs your pump is giving up the love. With that many miles, replace the pump with a Walbro unit regardless....

If you don't hear the pump until oil pressure is up thats the cause of your hard start problem.

Now you have to find the cause of the cause

The fuel pump is controled by the ecm through a relay. Now either the relay is faulty or it's missing an input.

Daron tells no lies about the pump either way, at this point it should be changed as a maintence item. They were bearly adaquate when the trucks were new and 10+ years doesn't make em any better.

replacing with stock is not the preferred method either.

ron gregory (do a search on him) has pumps, as do other companies.

I would do pump first, and even if truck ran like a top.

It's probably the fuel pump relay over by the fender on the driver's side. If the relay doesn't work, the fuel pump won't run until you have enough oil pressure to make the oil pressure switch work, and close the circuit. I had this problem a couple months after I bought my truck.

Did replacing the FP relay fix the problem?

Hell yeea, instantly. Same exact symptoms as airbrush is having. It's easy to troubleshoot, if anyone needs help on troubleshooting this I can describe what you want to do, no problem.

Ok where is that relay ? And which relay is it? I think that is my problem, :D also I found some ZO6 Wheels front are 17''s and the rears are 18''s with tires that have 1000 miles on them, but the front are 1'' shorter than the back (less roll out)will this affect the AWD partor will I be fine driving down the road? Thanks

TD_airbrush_works, here's what you do to check and see if your fuel pump relay is the proble:

The fuel pump relay has four wires going into it they're orange, grey, green, and black. The relay is the closest one to the driver side fender on the fire wall. To see if the relay is the cuase of the slow start you should have at least a test light. Pull the relay out of it's base, now you can accsess the terminals of the wires going to the relay. You need to see if you have power at the orange wire, it should always be hot. If you have power there, take a jumper wire and jump power from the orange wire to the grey wire, doing that should make your pump run. Now go to start it and see if it doesn't fire up quicker now that the fuel pump is running. If the fuel pump doesn't run after you jump it you have issues with wiring back to the pump or the pump itself. Also check and see that the green wire has power for a few seconds after you turn the key on if it doesn't you got problems there. I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me but the black wire should be the ground so if you have anything like a DVOM that you can check continuity with check the black wire's terminal to make shure it is grounded.

If this doesn't help do a search on the subject, type fuel pump relay and you'll see what other people have wrote on the subject but hopefully I helped you with this.

Also, I don't think the 17"-18" combo works because you need to have the same diameter tire front and rear, you might be able to make it work but it would look like shit with a higher profile tire in the front to match the diameter of the lower profile tire on the rear 18"s.

To see if the relay is your prob, you could eliminate it by just engergizing the pump via the Test connector on the firewall. Apply 12volts and immediately start truck... If it still starts hard, then look into a pump. If it fires right up, swap relays.
