Finally had my trans rebuilt

I'm picking it up today from Atomic as recommended by a few guys on here.
I bought a 2800 stall from Edge racing converters, after it was recommended and I saw a lot of good reviews. The owner was helpful and quick to respond to any questions.

I bought the rebuilt kit through probuilt automatics in CA.

I also picked up the stainless cooler lines from Sportsmachines, as well as the poly trans mount.

If anyone's interested, here's what I ended up getting-- I'm hoping it holds up for a few years lol.

Intermediate/reverse boost valve .300
New late 1993 pressure regulator valve
New replacement stator support with extra wide bushing installed in the forward part of the stator and a extra wide bushing installed in the rear of the stator

"Clutches, Steels And Pressure Plates"
4 Borg-Warner reverse/input clutches .078

2 Borg-Warner overrun clutches .078
2 Overrun steels .091
5 Borg-Warner low/reverse clutches .087

Re: Finally had my trans rebuilt

It was the pro street elite, it's listed at $1088 I think it was. It seemed like a fair price compared to some others I looked at. He actually recommended the $800 one, but I opted for the next one up

That's more of what I was wondering if it was cost effective compared to an 80e Install.

Well bad news, I just drove an hour to Atomic parking lot and first thing I see is the new convertor, trans lines, and trans mount sitting in the passenger seat... LOL, guess I shouldn't have paid over the phone when told it was done  I have no clue what the deal is, I had just talked to them on the phone earlier specifically asking if everything was installed.. It's all written on the work order as labor charge too

Re: Finally had my trans rebuilt

I got to pick it up last night, for real this time lol. I guess one of the builders had to take time off so another guy reinstalled the parts, not knowing about the cooler, mount, and convertor but they were cool about it--got it done and cut a check for the hassle without me asking. I didnt really care about that, just wanted the truck back :rotf:

Night and day difference, the shifts are very quick but not overly firm and the converter is tighter than my 173k stock one, I wasn't sure how the 9" would be but I recommend the one I went with even on the stock turbo it drives really well and is much lighter than the 11"

I definitely recommend the kit for the price/performance-- it includes pretty much everything that is top of the line for the 700, took a while but I looked up each part that went into it and everything checked out. PATC kits of the same level are much more $$. However plan accordingly because it did take some time to receive everything from Dana at probuilt, but at the end of the day it came together and I'm happy with the money spent. He also spoke with trans builder over the phone through parts of the install that had modifications which was cool.

Overall cost for everything-- labor, converter, stainless trans cooler lines, poly mount, kit, and fluids was a little over $3200 if anyone is curious, but this should be about as stout as a 700 can be with some eye candy in the mix as well

Re: Finally had my trans rebuilt

I see a rebuild possibly in my future, but I notice you haven't listed replacing/upgrading either of the planetary carriers. Apart from the obvious cost, is there any other reason or advice given by Dana not to do this.

What's the rest of your engine build? Cam/injectors, heads/turbo..

Dana mentioned that they are not a necessary and that went against a lot of what I read from "online trans shops," but after reading through a couple hours of crap from ls1tech to whatever other site I came across that sold "high performance" transmissions-- I noted that many reputable builders had said they weren't a necessary part, unless they needed replacement to begin with and even then they are a minor upgrade of a part that isn't a fail point. It came down to the words of forum jockies (that mostly bought the non-oem chinese 5 pinion to begin with lol) and retailers versus small independent shops with experience and hundreds of builds that aren't trying to upsell items that they could easily mark up. I went with the latter.

The only one I had considered was the sonnax 6 pinion for the 2.84 first gear but decided it wasn't worth it for the extra $500.

As far as my build, It's stock with $59, 255 lph fp,and 18psi lol-- turbo is a work in progress right now, will be similar in size to a pt6062, but all of the truck crap got pushed back in order to buy a house but I'm closing next week so that will be over with.. My priorities are all wrong, I know

I'm hoping to have 3" downpipe and exhaust before fall is over, and if I'm lucky the turbo will be installed at the same time. I'm going to see what I can do with my 173k long block while having a new one built next fall. End goal is a reliable, mid-low 11 second daily driver over the next two years.

Re: Finally had my trans rebuilt

I like you don't have the underpinning experience to know what needs to be done, only to try and digest and decipher the fact from the fiction on the interweb.
I suppose like you mentioned, if experience has shown that a component (assembly in this case) has survived for 20 years and doesen't show any signs of distress, wear or fatigue, there is a reasonable chance that it is re-useable. I am aware that any stressed component does have a finite cycle life before it will fail or show distress, but as you have, you sometimes have to draw a line somewhere and balance costs against risk. I'm sure Dana wouldn't risk his reputation either, although sometimes as we all know sh1t happens.

Re: Finally had my trans rebuilt

Looks like a stout build. When mine was redone, the builder left out the torque converter checkball.
Torque lock up is noticeable. I like it. Discount? I didn't get their advertised military discount. I paid en extra $50 on top of initial quote. So far, trans has been shifting spot on.
