Finally bought a shift governor kit

Well, after a year of shifting 5200-5400rpms (only about 500miles of driving), I finally just broke down and bought a governor recalibration kit. When my tranny was rebuilt, Waller upped the line preassure so it has always shifted high. Anyone ever used one and have any advice which springs and weights to start with to get me down to 4800rpm again? I can't wait to get the rpm's under control so I can up the boost.

The kit comes with a guide and the springs should be rainbow color coded from firm to soft. What does your existing governor look like? Mrweelr had a great thread in this forum with photos of his. The stock GM governor has very thin weights. GM must have calibrated the OEM trans for the low shifts in the valve body, because the thinner the weights, the higher the shift RPM (so it is unusual to me, that the stock tranny would shift low with such a lightweight governor). Regardless of what you have now, you need to add weight to it to bring the shifts down.

However, if you already have a heavy weight governor, the B&M kit won't do much good as all of its weights are very small and thin. My guess is they made it for high revving Small Block Chevys who are all trying to raise their shift points, quite the opposite situation than someone trying to achieve a 4400-4800 RPM shift for their 4.3 Turbo truck.

A tranny shop should have a supply of various governors and weights you could get, for me the best ones were extra heavy inners like what Mrweelr posted. I still had to try about 25 governor combos before I found what I was looking for. Tedious, annoying, messy!! The best tip is when you put the governor cover back on:

1.) Don't pound in the center, to avoid denting it inward (that would put the governor gear in misalignment)
2.) When testing governors, use datamaster to record WOT shift points and make notes and adjust.
3.) When you put the cover back on, don't tap it on all the way, because it's a bitch to get off, and if you are changing governors over and over, its a lot easier to remove when the cover is less than fully seated. The only drawback is a few drips of ATF every now and then, but it shouldn't take you more than a week or two to get the shift points set where you want even including trips to the trans shop.

PS: I give you "HELLA PROPS" for addressing this very critical performance issue!  :D

I gotta tell you....its funny as hell to see a pic of a C5 and a Ty, and the C5's the one on jackstands! That's it....bye.

Re: Finally bought a shift governor kit

I have the stock ty govenor in right now. I am not going to touch it though. I am going to get a governor from another 700 my friend has. I think it is out of a 305 caprice. I am just hoping there is enough weight to bring the shift down. If not, at least I will have some extra pieces to add weights to. I figure I will work with the heaviest weights and springs and work my way up.

Yeah the reliable car on the stands, I was installing the LG Pro headers and a new clutch in the vette. It's okay, all of my cars seem to end up on jack stands at some point. ESPECIALLY the Typhoon.

Ok. Just make sure the green gears are the same..

305s usually have a fairly early shift point so if thats what was in the caprice you may actually end up pretty close to where you want to be without much work.

I thought the same thing.

Re: Finally bought a shift governor kit

I used the B&M kit, and had my friend weld an additional 5 grams to one of the inner weights. This brought my shifts down from 5300RPM (stock internals motor) to 4800-5000RPM...still too high for optimum power. I already had a modified governor in my RPM trans, with a bunch more weight than the stocker - it's the one on the left in this pic:

Governor5.JPG

We removed one of the inner weights on there and welded on a heavier one. I also changed the springs. Now, the part throttle shifts are earlier than I would like and WOT shifts are still too high. I've installed a new valve body assembly from RPM and this fixed my 3-4 WOT upshift issue, but the shift points are still too high and the TCC never locks. Going to be pulling the RPM TC out and installing a TCS billet 2800 from Jwaller soon. Otherwise, I'm putting the rusty stock converter back in as I'm convinced my 1/4 miles are being seriously hurt by this loose, non-locking, high-RPM shifting tranny. Changing the governor weights is a PITA and I will install a 4L80E if and when this 700R4 blows.

Re: Finally bought a shift governor kit

Check your pump.

If they put a .570" TV boost valve in it or a REALLY stiff pressure regulator spring, it will up pressure and up the shift points. With the clutches available now, the astronomical pressures that the old "shift kits" and huge boost valves used to do aren't necessary anymore.
Look to see if the spring is blue, white or pink. And the TV boost valve will need to be mic'd to see if it's a .500" or a .570". .500" is plenty of pressure. Raybestos has a new clutch coming out that has the coefficient of friction of the blues but the price of the reds. The technology has come a long way.

I guess I am doing a little better than you are MRWHEELR. WIth the heaviest springs and weights mine will shift plenty low. I use my TCC lockup switch to make the convertor lock sooner.

Did you check what I told you about?

Also, did you verify that when you are at WOT, does the TV valve get plunged flush with the bushing? You have to get your TV relationship to WOT correct.

Yes, I checked the TV valve relationship before I installed the new valve body - it was correct. I don't know what size TV boost valve is in there...never got a build sheet with the trans. I'm going to install a new TC soon (either 9/11 billet or custom Yank PY3400E) and go from there. I'm confident this will solve the high shift RPMs.

Converter won't fix the problem if your running really high line pressures. It's something that can be done with the trans in the vehicle as well.

i read you have a waller tranny, why don't you just call him? alot of people have a waller tranny with good results, he knows his stuff.
not tellting that george blake doesn't know his, but i think you really need to sort it out with the guy who did your transmission first.

I have talked to him. It is just the line preassure. He said I needed to use the heavier weights. That is why I bought the kit. It is working for me. I am just waitng on some cooler evenings to do wot and data logging to see where I am now.

Re: Finally bought a shift governor kit

Question: Is your engine stock? The reason I ask is you said
"I can't wait to get the rpm's under control so I can up the boost."

For a modified engine I would think 5200 - 5400 would be good. For stock, 4800 would be better. But why does the higher shift point affect boost? Just curious.
