Custom intercoolers

I was just wondering if anyone ever had a custom liquid to air made.

I think Ryan (OddfireV6) had a custom air/air made, by Spearco? I ran across a liq to air on ebay that looked really similar to our CAC....

And it looks like it wouldn't be all that hard to mimic the stock design with that core. It would resemble the stock look, 8) , and might even be cheaper than the ATR/Conley IC.

If you go here you can fax all the stuff to Spearco and they can give you an estimate.

I think air 2 waters a waste of time, but if your just looking to upgrade the stock intercooler system I think the upper intercooler is definitely the restriction, you might see a tenth from a better cooler like your looking at, is it worth the trouble, probably not.

Here are some general numbers I use to figure it out possible gains.

10 degrees cooler mat = 1% increase in power

So, with the stocker I'd start the 1/4 at 80 and end at 180 giving me an average temp of 130. Now you run a better cooler like your looking at and start your run off at 80 degrees and end at 140, your average is 110. So you gained 2% in power x lets say 300 HP, thats 6 HP.

air/water gives you the ability to have >100% efficiency. with a/a thats impossible.

when done correctly a/w is the best option for short bursts of accleration ...ie drag racing.

I agree! With a/w you can get below ambent which you cant do with a/a with a 2 gal tank in the bed full of ice on a 95 deg day I have 68 deg ia temps at the track and they never reach 100 deg

I would like to see what you did for the 2 gallon ice chest/tank in the bed.
Since i allready rerouted the lines to the fender, it wouldnt be much more trouble to run some hoses to the bed.
Sounds like the old cool cans with the coils for coiling the gas I used to see as a kid in the 70's.

Anyone know of a 2 1/8 temp gauge that goes down to say 40-50 degrees?

The gauge i have for my ic temp starts at like 100.

I think we'd all agree that the ice chest with a good intercooler would work the best for drag racing only, but for a street car its a waste of time IMO.

NRD-B2513 2 5/8 in. diameter, 49 to 350 degrees F, red LED, water temperature gauge ... $69.95
CSI-1225 Digital, up to 300 degrees, 2 1/16 in., temperature gauge ... $79.95
SUM-G2984 2 1/16 in. diameter, black face and bezel, digital, red LED display, water temperature gauge ... $32.95

Couldn't find 2 1/8 but I think the 2 1/6 in will fit. Summitracing .com

Are you measuring the water temp or manifold temp? If that's mat your doing great.

I have a water gauge on the output of the ic (up top). Mat is measured for me only with the dm.

Mike hoping one of those smaller gauges is mechanical.

As for drag racing only, thats why I'm asking!

its the same idea as the cool cans of olden days. and yes it's perfect for the street too. gives you added volume and when you want to go racing all you do is fill it with ice and water. you dont have to run around all the time with that extra ice and water. but when you need it its there.

thats what ifigured but would like to see if his deisgn is something trick looking. rather not reinvent an allready good clean design.

So post a pic or a how to in the tech article section.

I have a dual-temp intercooler gauge in my truck, been in there for like two years or so.

For intercooler upgrades I have: wrapped IC in thermotec, rerouted IC lines with "soft" lines, Jabsco pump (always on), ATR aux CCHE, 90% distilled water and 10% Water Wetter.

My mat's when cruising are generally within 10 degrees of ambient, down to about 60 degrees (haven't ever seen it lower than 58, even when it's in the low 40's outside). During a pull they get up in the 90's but stay under 100 on an average 65-70 degree day. 10-15 seconds or so *AFTER* the pull, you'll see the temp spike up another 10 degrees or so while cruising (as the hot water comes back around the loop). 20-30 or so seconds later it drops back to the original temps close to ambient as the liquid circulates through the system again and the cche dumps the heat.

The temps on the hot side of the intercooler are like 220-280 degrees at the end of a pull (depends on boost). This is with a stock turbo/heads/cam truck. I inject H20, but that's aft of both of these temp sensors, one is right at the inlet of the intercooler, one is sticking up 1/4 of an inch from the exit of the core.

The thermo wrap on the IC seemed to be a nice gain. I would say on a stock truck I would rate the changes from best to worst as: pump on full time with Jabsco, IC wrap, AUX CCHE, soft lines.

Just FYI.

I have not had my upper IC off yet to do any porting, but am looking forward to it.

I am not going to argue with the water/air being a pain in the a$$.
I have spent hours upon hours draining/refilling, and it is so much fun trying to get all the trapped air out of the lines.

I have a aux cooler in the grill area, but am probably going to swap it with one that doesn't make so many passes, as it really slows the flow.

I would love a small ice chest in the engine compartment with the ic lines running through it for the track. I have seen one in a buick that was really trick.... should ask Roland about that for more detail.

sorry, dont have pics . But it is an iglo 2gal water cooler from a hardware store $25. Made a bracket to hold it on the driver side front of the bed. Drilled 2 holes in the floor of the bed and routed the lines to it.I have the atr aux cooler and pump. You have to put the pump between the tank and the upper ic to push the water through it . and when youare at the track you loop out the 2 lower coolers and just run the tank and the upper ic. if you dont the ice will not last very long.

later,

You are right I measured the front end up a number of times and then I called Spearco and ended up faxing them exactly what I wanted and the tech who actually builds your unit calls you to discuss what you are doing!! It was built and at my door front in 2 days from Cali to Chicago, now thats what I call service. I'm very happy with my set up air to air rules IMHO....but if you want short IC piping and large surface area you have to be willing to cut up your front clip which not everyone is willing to do...me?? I'll mod just about anything 0X
