I dropped my motor off at the machine shop on Monday, after talking with the engine builder, he said if I plan on making 500hp, we should at least girdle the bottom end.
For you, or the Motor? Worried about Dunlop
syndrome?
I've been looking around and haven't found a girdle for the 4.3L, so I'm wondering if there available for the 4.3L, or if we could use a 5.7L girdle, and customize it?
You gotta remember, 500 turbo horses are like
400 N/A horses... the load diagrams tell the
tale.
I think the crank is going to give up before
you'll blow the webbing out of the block.
However, the girdle might help the bottom
resist flexing, which might relieve a little
stress on the crank.
Interesting thought about the 5.7 girdle...
maybe use the rear half of it, sans the front
main part of it? Gonna have to notch it more
due to the bigger rod ends, but it would be
interesting to see how close it matched up.
Bottom line, though, you don't need one for
what you're building. Your engine guy is
thinking of N/A paradigms, and block loading
on a turbo motor is a different beast. A good
4-bolt main kit will give you a bit more
bottom end strength, but I haven't seen any
evidence that they live any longer than a
well-done 2-bolt setup.
