Another PTE Question...

Just curious...

assuming all necessary standard/safty mods have been done. running the correct injectors etc. assuming a good 9/11 at the correct stall was in with a strong tranny... and assuming the goals were to go fast as possible with stock internals keeping safty in mind....

is a pte 63 to big to go with (without blowing motor)?

would the differance be major compared to a 52 lets say?

what amount of boost can be handled with a 63 compared to a 52?

any other opinions throw in there...

I wouldn't do a 63 on a stock motor, unless you were talking about a motor rebuild within the near future. I think it's too large a turbo to remain responsive for a stocker, and with the stock engine, if you give up your bottom end... well the top end is weak. I've been at both ends of the spectrum, too large a turbo, too small a turbo. Both situations suck.

What mods do you have ? stock motor ?

I'm with BG on this one.. I have proof that a stocker motor can easily be snuffed out with a turbo as small as a PTE PT52. I would recommend AGAINST it on a stock lower end. FWIW, I never exhibited any knock when it was getting tuned, there was always plenty of fuel flow and the knock sensor never registered a single thing. YMMV, I had 110k on my lower end which obviously may have something to do with it.

Ya, I must say this is what I expected with the stock motor. I was just curious to what people thought. It does seem you can go to big of a turbo without the proper motor build. Thanks for the responses!

Code what?
Tydriver, sorry to hear about your motor. Im going to be installing a PTE-52 kit, Mike Lee A2A,9/11 covertor and the 50# chip with the delphi's. My Syclone's trans and motor are both un-built with 57k, but am planning on building both by the end of the year. I'm ditching the ATR 2800 i was using with the stock turbo. I got a 3000 9/11, is this to much stall for the PTE-52 or would a 2800 9/11 be more ideal to use?

Thanks

Erik

How many people use the PTE TE-44 turbo kit? My Sy is mostly stock and I don't plan on rebuilding the motor. I just want something with a little more juice than the stock Mitsu. From what I heard from Turbo Regal owners that the PTE 50 series turbos are the same as the 40 series turbos (for example: TE-44 and TA-49 = PT-52).

That's not true IMHO. The 44 and 49 are T04E 60 trim, while the 52 is a T04B 60-1 as far as I know. Turbine side is different as well.

BTW. I'm on the way to find out how well the stock motor handles a PT52 with small boost. Hopefully it will last for while...

I have a TE44, been on truck almost 2 yrs. Stock motor with about 135k miles, and still strong. I don't go over 17psi.

I saw knock go down because of the cooler intake charge, and overall its a good turbo for a stock truck. I'm also on stock converter and spool is fine for now. I don't know how much longer this motor/trans will hold up, just looking for a 12 sec slip before its time for a rebuild.

I'd have to say the PTE- TE-44 is the way to go with a stock motor especially if you do most of your driving on the street. Good response and plenty of power where you need it most.

I run the TE-44 w/ wet center section, electronic boost control, Brian Hartman built tranny & Billet 9/11 TC.

As long as you can minimize knock there should be no problems. I get less knock with more power at lower boost levels with the TE-44 than I did with the stock turbo. The only time I really encounter knock is if I push the boost past 17 psi and the tranny hits 3rd gear. I need to experiment with the 3rd gear boost control on the Boost Command boost controller a bit more.

Later,

Typically the PTE stuff uses the stage V turbine wheel - the exhaust is really what set PTE's turbos apart from regular TE series stuff that has been used by Buick guys for years.

I don't see any problem running the slightly bigger turbos on stock motors. My Sy has had TE series stuff on it for over a year now, probably 10k miles on it. If anything, it will be easier on it, as long as you aren't shooting for 10s ;) Less backpressure, less chance of overboost, cooler intake charges etc.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

For those running the PTE TE-44 turbo kit what times are running in the quarter mile? I'm looking for a low 12's to mid 12's. Nothing more just a strong running Sy.

Red Armstrong and John Craig told my brother that the PTE 50 series turbo's are basically a 40 series turbos. Second hand information but I don't recall what makes them the same.

Anyway, I plan on doing the PTE 44 kit this summer sometime. I noticed some are with stock stall converters and some aren't with this kit. Will the TE-44 be fine with the stock stall converter or should I upgrade to something else? I really want a ball bearing turbo, does PTE have a ball bearing kit? Boost will be less than 20 but probably around 18 PSI.

How will the PTE TE-44 kit work well with the ultimate chip?

Thanks for all the help guys.

The stock injector Ultimate won't work well with the integral wg, which comes with the PTE kit. So it either requires some custom stuff, or you should upgrade to the 50's (injectors too of course), which was geared for the PTE kit. Brian, pls correct me if I'm wrong.

whats good about the 44 is you can change the housing to a turbonetics t4 to get rid of the adapter. I spoke to pte and they said that using this turbonetics housing it will be faster than theirs. I had my turbo rebuilt and the guy just put it on. I just found out recently what it was. I have nothing to compare it to but i guess why would pte say it if it was not true? Ivanko what housing do you have? Can i do a wet section?

what you said makes absolutely no sense.

to start, the only adaptor you get rid of would be the 3-4 bolt adaptor used in the past with a GN style turbine housing. Switching to a T4 turbine housing would result in a turbo that does not fit the bolt pattern of ATR or Stock manifolds.

My 44 came witht the adapter. I was just saying you can clean it up. Maybe i said the wrong number. Is it a t03? The way i understood it the t4 has 4 holes and the 3 has 3.

both a t3 and t4 have 4 bolts. The flange of a T4 is just larger. As far as the other stuff you were trying to say, I have no clue.

thanks for lesson ghettosled. I guess i did not undertsand all of his terminology as well as i thought i did. We spoke about allot of different things in a short span so i was bound to mess something up. So now knowing this info i guess i should say don't use the pte housing that comes with it. The tech that i spoke to seems to like the turbonetics better. By the way nice video of the street races! :D
